CDC has new requirements for all dogs entering or returning to the United States

We've been receiving numerous inquiries about the recently introduced regulations concerning dogs entering the United States.

Effective August 1, dogs entering the country will need additional documentation as per the new guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Although primarily targeting imported dogs, these requirements will also affect dogs returning from trips to Canada with their U.S. owners, as well as dogs accompanying their Canadian owners to the U.S., even for short visits.

Regrettably, there is limited information available about the requirements and guidelines, except that pets will require a microchip, a CDC Dog Import Form (currently in development, reportedly accessible beginning July 15th), and ONE of the following options:

  • Certification of Foreign Rabies Vaccination and Microchip; OR
  • Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination; OR
  • Valid USDA export certificate; OR
  • Certification of Dog Arriving from DMRVV-free or Low-Risk Country; OR
  • Foreign export certificates & veterinary records.

For more detailed information on these requirements, please visit the CDC website https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/dogs.html

We empathize with those seeking seamless border crossings with their pets. While we can't provide definitive answers now, we are monitoring closely for any updates and will provide updated information as it emerges. In the meantime, the best advice we can provide is to ensure your pet is microchipped and vaccinated against rabies.
